Suggestions about what to do and where to go
It does not need to cost a lot of money to go out with your child. Going to the park, shops, library, garden centre, museum, going for a walk, for a ride on a bus, or to  feed the ducks all offer exciting opportunities for learning with your child.

The important thing is that you are going out together, talking about what you see, what you are doing and sharing time together. This in itself will most importantly build your child’s confidence, curiosity and language skills. All of these support children’s ability to learn.

What could we do together?

What learning might take place?

Planning the journey – where shall we go?  How will we get there – walk, bus, cycle or train? What time shall we leave? How long will it take? How much will it cost? What do you think we’ll see?

Shall we take a picnic?

Shall we send our friends a postcard?

Take a favourite toy and take photos of him/her on your day out – add this to the learning diary and share with your teacher and friends back at school.

Send your favourite picture to a friend attached to an e-mail

While you are on your trip talk to your child about what they see and do – e.g. going up and down the slide,  and through the bars on a climbing frame. Talk about the things you see, hear and smell e.g. animals in the street or field, an aeroplane overhead, smells from  a bakery, the spider on the wall  - you could extend this by looking for information in books and on websites about what you have seen.

Being excited about going to new places and discovering the world around them. Keeping ourselves safe in new places.

Learning new words, talking together, discussing ideas. Talking about what is happening.

Making marks on a postcard for a friend.

Looking for numbers in the environment; talking about time; talking about and handling money. To extend this – children could be encouraged to work out the cost of more than one item e.g. 2 ice-creams; how long the journey takes.

Looking at the world around them, noticing what they see; noticing technology around them – traffic lights,  information screens at the station and tills at the shops. Taking photos of the trip to document the trip. Sending a photo by e-mail

Children will gain skills in using cutlery for making sandwiches.

Being healthy and active – walking, cycling, climbing and having a positive attitude to a healthy lifestyle.

Children might wish to pretend play the day they have experienced – by playing buses and trains at home – save your tickets!
