HealthTec South West Limited, a health and social care resource and education centre for the south west region will officially open its doors on Wednesday 28th April 2010

The Centre which is based in the new Forresters Business Park in Estover will provide real-to-life simulated experiences for young people primarily aged 14-19. Half day or full day scenarios including ‘The Patient Journey’ and ‘Care of the Elderly’ are mapped to the curriculum and allow students to get out of the classroom and hands-on with real equipment in authentic environments.

Bookings are being taken now but the official opening in April will allow learners and those involved with education or health as well as members of the public to come and see the fully equipped Centre. Local press will be covering the event which is being organised with support from Business Administration and Finance Diploma students as part of their Events Management module and it is hoped a ‘celebrity’ will cut the ribbon.

Preview days are also being held on Monday 22nd and Wednesday 24th March for teachers and training providers to find out more about the HealthTec scenarios and activities on offer.

For further information about these days or HealthTec South West Limited please contact Kat Kelleher on 01752 695300 or email kat.kelleher@healthtecsw.org.uk

"Opt into Learning" ImpAct show continues to receive very positive feeback
Just to say a big thanks to the team who came in this morning; Jimmy Ben and Rowena; they were a big success with the Y9 and hopefully will reinforce some of the ideas they need to consider before their options evening. Great energy, and much more memorable than me standing up and showing a powerpoint!  Thank you again.

Inspire'09 another great success
Students from around the city and its travel to learn area had  a great time exploring various employment sectors and progression opportunities at this years event, held in the Roland Levinsky Buliding in the University of Plymouth. Part of the event included the DCSF interactive Diploma Roadshow providing information on all the Diplomas available in the city. In the evening parents and carers were invited to have a look as well as discuss the variety of other progression opportunities available in Plymouth.
Over 140 young people turned up with their parents in the evening, which was fantastic!
We are currently collating feedback from the event .... at the moment a summary looks like: great venue, well organised, good turnout, great to talk to young people, enjoyable .... can't wait for the next one!
"Opt into Learning" ImpAct Tour started with a bang today at Coombe Dean

Just to say that the Impact team came and performed 'Opt into Learning' for our year 9 students today.

WOW! They were fantastic! A very fast moving, high impact production that got a lot of accurate information over in a short space of time.

A very well organised and professional event that we would love to have back next year - possibly included within a parents' information evening.

Thank you!

Creative Puzzle 20 November 2009
Nearly 200 students from the region gathered for the second 14-19 creative and media event - a partnership activity between the University of Plymouth, Plymouth College of Art and PCC Department of Children's Services, funded through Aim Higher.
An inspirational key note address was given by Danny Bamping, owner of Bedlam Puzzles and Craze Things. Graduating ten years ago from PCA Danny gave an insight into how he became a successful serial entrepreneur - one of the few to turn down a Dragon's Den Offer!
There were lots of specialist workshops covering subjects such as photography, 3D, GPS drawing, painting and marketing. It was great to see so many young people really enjoying themselves ...and they all went away with a Bedlam puzzle!
There will be an exhibition of the work starting on the evening of Wednesday 2 December in the Scott Building of the university. Come along to the private view at 6.00 p.m.
September Guarantee

The full report on the September Guarantee in available in the document library under "Plans".  Please find below a summary from Shirley Walker.

Year 11
99.41% of young people received offers of learning under the September Guarantee.

Nationally we are ranked 2nd highest - the England Average was 95.85% and the South West Average was 96.92%

Year 12
Plymouth – 99.13% of young people received offers of learning under the September Guarantee

Nationally we are ranked 2nd highest - the
England Average was 89.39% and the South West Average was 92.32%

As you can see, we performed extremely well against the national results.  I think that this is due to:

·         Increased penetration rates i.e. IAG contact from Connexions with year 11 and 12 students

·         Interventionist guidance strategies that we have adopted

·         The strong offer of learning available from providers in the city working in partnership to make a good offer.

30" Commercial Challenge 2009
The 30” Commercial Challenge, which was launched for the first time in 2008, is a competition run by a Partnership between Plymouth City Council, Plymouth Media-Partnership and Plymouth College of Art and Chew TV.   We invited schools and colleges in the Plymouth area to put forward teams of up to 5 students aged between 14 and 19 and their brief is to produce a thirty second video commercial for a local business of their choice.  We are delighted that ten teams from six schools and City College Plymouth are taking part in this competition. The initiative begins tomorrow with an all-day workshop and will culminate in December with a screening of all the commercials produced in front of a panel of industry experts who will select a winner.  The winning school/college will receive a video camera and the winning students will receive gift vouchers. All entries will be screened on Chew TV in the New year Good luck to all teams involved and watch this space for further announcements!
HealthTec  Hands-on Health

HealthTec is coming to the South West and we would like to invite you to attend an information session where you can find out what HealthTec can do for you, your institution and most importantly yours students.

See the flyer under the events section for details.

Raising the Participation Age Strategy
You will no doubt be wondering whether the 14-19 team has a plan to ensure that everything is in place for the current year 8 cohort who will be the first cohort to participate in learning and training until they are seventeen.  We have not got a final plan yet.  However, a steering group has met twice this term and our plan will be available in the document library by mid-November.  The steering group comprises representatives from schools (primary, special and secondary), FE and WBL providers, the Youth Service, the EWS, CIC and care leavers, parents, the National Apprenticeship Service, employers etc.  We have exciting plans to involve learners in a meaningful way. This broad base of engagement should ensure that our RPA strategy covers all perspectives.
Welcome to the 14-19 Team Blog
We will be using this blog to keep you up-to-date with developments.  The blog will not replace our regular 14-19 updates.  However, the blog will enable us to communicate with you on a more regular basis
