Communication and
Interaction
Many of our
students have communication difficulties, and Bidwell Brook is committed to
supporting our students to reach their communicative potential. Communication skills development is built
into our curriculum and we have a Total Communication approach throughout the
school that ensures that all forms of communication are recognised.
As part of
our commitment to improving communication across the school, we applied for,
and were successfully awarded Specialist School Status in Communication and
Interaction in 2009. We have a purpose
built Communication Centre where we run communication groups, training
workshops, meetings and individual therapy sessions.
The
Communication and Interaction Team comprises 2 Speech and Language Therapists,
and a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant.
We also have a Specialist Outreach Teacher who works jointly with the
Speech and Language Therapist to provide an outreach service to support children
with complex needs in local community mainstream schools.
The
Communication and Interaction Team work closely with teaching staff to assess,
advise and develop programmes to:
- support children to communicate
to the best of their ability
- support parents and staff to
provide effective communication environments at home and at school
