My weekend

A week of mixed emotions
The key stage 1 children had a great week of activities; visiting Silver Wood, Bicton, Park, the garden centre and holding a mini Olympics in the village hall, Meanwhile whilst they were having fun, the rest of us had a week of exams. Strangely the children quite enjoyed them - that's Kentisbeare children  for you!

The week ended with mixed emotions. We held a day of celebrations to say goodbye and good luck to Mr White who starts his new job as Head of Teaching and Learning at Thorverton. Olly White has been at KPS for 12 years and has contributed a great deal to the school, Although we wish him every happiness and success at his new school he will be greatly missed.

After school we continued our 'farewell to Olly' party, receiving drop-in visits from ex-pupils, staff and other well wishers. The staff stayed on for a barbecue and we would like to think Olly had a good send off.

The weekend weather was great and I spent most of it enjoying my garden. The week ahead looks good, weather wise. The photogarapher is in on Monday to take class and sport team photographs . I'm looking forward to accompanying the year 4 children to Embercombe on Tuesday. Not sure about sleeping in a Yurt- do they have electricity so I can use my hair straighteners!
That's what Bank Holidays are for.

The children and staff did themselves proud on Friday as we all took part in the Official  Race for Life Schools Event. We decided to do it on 'May the fourth' so that in addition to pink/blue the children and staff could dress up as Star Wars characters. It was very moving finding out who they were thinking of and running for. I'll try to post some photos later this week.We haven't had a final count up yet but we know we have raised a great amount  for Cancer Research and had alot of fun and exercise too.

The teams taking part in the Exmoor Challenge on Saturday had a tough day but managed a big smile at the end. Sixteen miles is a lot to walk when you're 11 years old. We are always hearing and reading about how children today are unfit, overweght and spend all their time infront of computers. Not these children that's for sure. KPS children are very active.

Having picked up some lovely plants at the nursery on the road to Dulverton I plan to make some hanging baskets this weekend. I made myself a 'to do'list which I intend to achieve before Tuesday. This list is all garden related so looking at the weather I might have set myself up to fail!

I might do some ironing or housework instead. Now that's really pushing the boat out.

Rain, rain and more of the same!
During last week we welcomed back the Baugh family who have spent the last 2 years living in Canada. Everyone was excited to see them all again and by the end of the week it felt like they'd never been away.
There's been a lot of rain this month. April showers is a little of an understatement.
The year 6 went off to PETROC college in Tiverton for a science and technology day. They had a fabulous time making powered vehicles. Mainly cars but boats would have been more appropriate.

The weekend weather upset my chickens who tried to move into the kitchen because it was so bad outside. My dog Thomas is no fan of rain either and would go all day without venturing out. My husband took ( nay dragged) him off to Killerton. Big mistake as  it was quite a scary adventure with blustery winds, rivers overflowing and trees and branches falling.

Let's hope that's it for the downpours as next week we have Race for Life, the Exmoor Challenge and the Great West Run to look forward to. It's not as much fun in the rain.

Summer Term starts well

The end of last term finished with mixed emotions; celebrating Mr Wrights wedding but also the news that Mr White will be leaving us in May. He will be taking up his new post as Head of Teaching and Learning at Thorverton School and we are very happy for him, although we will miss him very much. Mr White also had a double celebration as he and his lovely wife Celine are expecting a baby in September.

On Friday 18th May we plan to say goodbye properly and if you wish to say your  farewells then the gates will be open from 2.45pm. Hope to see you there.

This week ended with another celebration as Mrs Ainsworth was announced a finalist in this years Teaching Awards and the school was visited by 2 judges. It was a great day if not a little tiring, particularly for Mrs A. Look out in next weeks local papers for news coverage of the day. We now await a date in May when Helen will receive her award and who knows this may go on to the National finals in London. We all know she's brilliant.

the story so far
Where has the time gone? Since my sister's wedding ,myself and colleagues from Culmstock and Plymtree having been busily working on the Federation plans. It has taken ages mainly because of the financial uncertainties with a new government taking the reigns.

Last term we were all still engrossed with our own schools but have managed to involve our children in joint projects e.g. Poetry Quest. Next term we plan to work collaboratively on the 'Blood Hound' project which involves Science, Technology and Mathematics.
Also:

January

  • Kentisbeare opened the door to 3 year olds for the first time. Behind the scenes the school had to work quickly putting together a feasibility study and business plan to assure the county that there was a need for early years provision at the school. There needed to be sufficient numbers to be sustainable. We were anxious not to lose our future intake and were pleased that our proposals were accepted in such a short time period. We have already received a visit from the Early Years adviser who was very pleased with our provision and is keen to support and advise us where necessary.
  • Lifeboat men from Exmouth came to visit our KS1 children. Both children and staff were very excited and had a great day.
  • The Year 6 children visited The Royal Albert Memorial Museum to support their art work and history topic this term. The museum had been closed for some time for ‘a make-over’ and wow did it look fantastic when it re-opened. Many of the children have taken their families back there since at the weekends.
  • The Year 3 children had a WW2 day which involved dressing up, cooking war time recipes, singing popular songs of the time and performing these to their parents. In the Autumn term the children had studied this in more detail and the day was a celebration of all their hard work.
  • The Kentisbeare School Association (KSA) organised the annual quiz night which, as always, was very well attended. The fish and chip supper was greatly received and all profit made went towards school resources.

February

  • The annual Culm Valley Swimming Gala was held at Tiverton Pool and having won it for the last 4 years we were somewhat apprehensive this year. Congratulations to Hemyock. We came 3rd, a very creditable performance.
  • CVF (kentisbeare, Culmstock and Plymtree) schools went to the Phoenix Theatre to watch professional poets perform, as part of their Poetry Quest involvement this term.
  • The KSA organised and ran a Valentine’s Disco. Always good fun although I do prefer to leave it to my younger staff these days!
  • A team of year 6 and interested year 5 children participated in the Exmoor Challenge practice walk (1st of 4 prior to the event). These walks are organised by Mr Wright and Ms Elenor (my deputy who is currently seconded as head at Membury School).
  • The Year 5 children attended the annual Fairtrade Conference at Cullompton CC. This is a great day out and much credit goes to the school and pupils who host the event.

March

As every year the school celebrated World Book Day. Each year group had different class activities.

  • The Years 3 and 4 spent an enjoyable day in Bristol, visiting the @ Bristol, Science Museum and SS Great Britain. What a fantastic day they had and well worth a second visit.
  • Our year 4 children went off to Culmstock for another poetry workshop as part of their involvement in the Princes Foundation Trust Poetry Quest Project.
  • 5 children had the opportunity to spend 2 fantastic days at Embercombe. Mrs P represented the CVLC as the teacher in charge and I’m sure she too had a great time. In fact I think she said she wants to live there!
  • The School received a visit from Artsmark assessor Zannah Doan. The school now has to wait to see if it will be awarded Gold. The school has held Arts Council Awards since 2002 and has been a Gold School since 2005.
  • As part of their topic work KS2 children dressed up to represent different periods in Modern Britain 1960s through the 1990s .I must say that having lived through all of these I prefer NOW!
  • 7 year 5 children went off to Blundell’s to enjoy a Classics Day together with other children from the Culm valley Small Schools group. They particularly enjoyed eating in the refectory.
  • Children in year2 and 4 had a visit from an artist from DAISI. During the day they explored print making in order to put together an Olympic Banner. This is part of a bigger project organised by DAISI and involves many other Devon schools. The exhibition will be in Exeter cathedral and will coincide with the day the Olympic flame will pass through Exeter.
  • The Year 5 children went cycling and Den making at Haldon Forest. This is always a good day out and Kentisbeare school children are great at cycling.
  • The year 4 children together with the other children in the CVF performed for their parents at the Phoenix Theatre. This showcased examples of the poetry they had explored and created as part of their involvement in Poetry Quest.
  • For Sports Relief the children participated in running and other strenuous activities during the day.
  • He school was well represented at the CVLC Cross Country 2nd Meet and our girls did exceptionally well bringing home the first place shield.
  • Year 4 children spent the day with artist Louise Waugh. Using observational skills and drawings done outside the classroom the children created block prints from recycled materials.
  • As last year the Easter ‘Eggstravaganza’ was well attended and  thoroughly enjoyed by all. It was a beautiful ,’summer-like’ evening.
  • The school arranged an extra celebration event this term- to congratulate Mr Wright . We wish him all the best on his wedding day and hope that he and Kelly will be very happy together.
  • The church service involved much participation from our children and was a perfect end to another busy term.

Hope you all had a great Easter break and well rested. I know the Summer term will be equally busy- but I will try and find the time to write weekly.

My sister's Wedding
I had a great weekend at my sister's wedding in Stockport. It was lovely to see all my family having a good time. The weather was kind and my sister looked absolutely gorgeous. I was so proud of my nephews who looked great .Ben,my sister's oldest boy, gave his mum away which brought a tear to  my eye.

My Dad would have loved this day and he would have been so proud to see Ben looking so grown up.

Great start to the new year
Mr Wright has settled in well to the year 2 class having replaced Mrs Clarke who we hope is enjoying the start of her retirement. Also Miss Tooze is working with Mrs Bastin in year 3 to allow her to develop her new role as Special Needs Co-ordinator.

The school Governors voted unanomously at the end of term to Federate with local schools Culmstock and Plymtree. We have now started the process of putting together the joint governing body of The Culm Valley Federation. Letters have gone home this last week for parent governor nominations. There will be 2 parent governors per school.

All classes have now launched into their work. The overarching theme this year is 'Great Britain' with this term focussing on our history and geography, next term Modern Britain and our multi-cultural society , leading to celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and of course the Olympic games.

An exciting and busy year ahead I think.

The year 3 children will be off to Pixies Holt next week for 3 days of outdoor activities. I'll let you know how they get on.
