| No | I am pleased to report that the U15 cricket team, made up of a mixture of Y9 and 10, won an excellent game last night to put them into the semi-final against St. John’s Marlborough, on Thursday 9th June. The conditions were not suited to cricket on a blustery evening, but all the boys chipped in with bat, ball or in the field. We scored 109-4 from our 20 overs with Luke Panes, Tristan Lundqvist and James Carruthers doing the bulk of the run scoring. We then bowled and fielded well and the game was delicately poised with Sheldon on 88-6 going into the penultimate over. Then all hell broke loose and skipper Joe Clare unleashed a remarkable over in which he took the last 4 wickets, including a hat-trick from his last three balls to win the game. A fantastic and exhilarating way for the Wiltshire player to finish the game. The game was played throughout in a fantastic spirit by both teams and they were a credit to both schools. | |

| No | Well done to Y10 Student Joseph Edwards who has just returned from Guernsey with the regional western counties boxing squad. Western counties won 5-3 overall from 8 bouts. Joe was up against a strong opponent in Casey Delamere, which at first looked to be a bit of a gamble because he is slightly heavier and older. From the first bell Delamere was agressive and strong but Joe managed to land a solid uppercut which shook him, this stopped the Guernsey fighter coming forward. From that point on Joe dominated using his superior boxing skills and eventually ran a clear winner. Joe's record this year is: 5 fights won 4, losing only to the 3 times western counties champion. His next fight is this Friday in Westbury and tickets for the match are £10 each. | |
| No | Joe Edwards of Y10 is a committed and highly skilled amateur boxer. His latest fight was representing Western Counties in the opening contest of the match between Western Counties & Guernsey at the Bristol Sporting Club show on 28th March at the Thistle Grand Hotel in Bristol. It was a junior contest against Jack Gilvear of Guernsey.
The fight was recorded on Hatton TV and it can be seen by following this link.

| No | Playing for their new Head Teacher the Yr 10 stormed into the final of the County Cup beating St. Laurence 22 – 0. Hard work, determination and a real passion for the job saw them overcome a very committed St. Laurence team. Tries from Ali Broughton and James Carruthers capped a great performance from the whole team, dominating both territory and possession. The County final is to be played on the 7th December, at Dauntsey’s School. | |

| No | St Augustine’s travelled to Chippenham with full confidence after 2 good results against Writhlington and Frome College last week. Sheldon who were playing up hill in the first half kicked off, the ball was caught and driven on by Craig Player, with good rucking from the forwards especially from Caleb Assirati, Matthew Toledo, Daniel Ralls and Elliott Newton; we retained possession and kept moving up the pitch via Alistair Broughton and Edward Bull. When we got 5 metres away from the Sheldon try line Joe Clare picked the ball up from the base of the ruck to dive in for the first score, unfortunately the conversation was missed giving us a 5-0 lead, 5 minutes into the game. From the restart the ball was caught by Ben Hardy Phillips and he drove forward with aggression. From the base of the ruck a quick pass was given to Alistair to go up the short side, shrugging off poor tackles from the Sheldon backs Alistair was then able to score the second try: again a difficult conversion was missed from the touch line by Joe Knight. Two further tries were scored in the first half from Alistair Broughton (converted by Joe Knight) and Joe Bakali – Laughton who capitalised on a 3 a man overlap, to round off a whitewash first half. After the interval, Sheldon came out showing determination and their efforts were rewarded by scoring two of their own tries to make the match closer at 22-10. However for the remainder of the second half St Augustine’s were camped in Sheldon’s 22 with combined efforts from John Galbraith, Tristan Lundqvist, Henry Beer, Conor O’Rourke, Tom Palmer and Andrew Wilkins made the pressure count to allow Alistair to score his Hat-Trick. The conversion was successful giving St Augustine’s a 29-10 win. Man of the Match: Alistair Broughton for his hard work resulting in him getting his well deserved Hat-Trick. | No | Well done to all the girls who played in the netball matches against St Laurence last Thursday. The year 7 girls won their match 13-3 and the year 8 girls narrowly lost theirs. It was a great effort by all and a confident start to the netball season. | |
| No | On Tuesday evening the year 10 netball team played in the Mid Wilts Netball tournament at Dauntsey's School. They came fourth overall and gained great experience from playing in this event. St. Augustine's competed against numerous independent schools and did themselves proud. Well done to Alice Dixon, one of our year 9 students who played two years above her age group. All girls can feel very proud of their performance. Thank you to Miss. Broadbent who umpired all matches.

| No | Well done to the year 7 rugby team who once again performed brilliantly against St Laurence yesterday evening. This victory was the third so far this season following excellent performances against John of Gaunt and Melksham Oak. Although classed as a training game where the scoreline wasn’t the most important priority we were the dominant team, with strong forward play and running the ball well along the backs we managed to score convincingly more than the opposition. | |
| No | A group of St. Augustine's students took the first step to setting up and running their own Team Handball club under a scheme supported by the Youth Sports Trust called Change4Life. Y12 student Declan O'Neill gives a full account of the leader training he and his fellow leaders underwent on Friday. On Friday the 1st October I took part in a Handball leader’s award lead by national handball players, John and Scott. Scott is hoping to represent Britain at the 2012 Olympics. Handball may be a sport that you have never heard of; however, it is a very popular sport in Europe and has been in the Olympics since 1936. Although the game has been played in Britain for a while it isn’t a main sport such as football or rugby as it has not had much media coverage. Thanks to the London winning the bid for the 2012 Olympics, there has been a lot of funding put into promoting the sport and that is why John and Scott are travelling around the different schools training handball leaders in an attempt to promote the sport at school level, as currently the only place to play handball local to us is Bristol. The course took place at our school and we were joined by another school, Greendown from Swindon. We had a slight advantage over the other school as luckily we are already taught handball at school and therefore knew the rules, whereas this was their first introduction to handball. We started the day in the classroom looking over the rules that we would be using when we set up our own handball clubs. We then proceeded into the Sports Hall where we were introduced to warm-up games that we could use such as handball tag. We then looked at different drills such as throwing, shooting and keeping. As the group we got to play a game, using the rules we had been taught, in the sports hall. This was one of the favourite parts of my day because I love playing handball. It also showed how easy it is to pick up handball as the other school, which had never played it before, managed to quickly understand how the game was played, providing us with a good challenge. However, St Augustine’s came out as the champions! During Period 4 we had to organise a handball tournament for Year Nine girls during Period 5. The organising went fairly well and we managed to have everything ready for Period 5, however during the game we soon realised that our planning was not working as well as we’d hoped. We had too many referees, which resulted in too many opinions and also too many timekeepers. This made communication hard but once we had identified and rectified the problems, the last few games ran much smoother. The tournament was a great piece of evidence of how easy handball is to pickup and how enjoyable it is. The Year Nine girls had never played or heard of handball before they got into the hall. Their first game was slow as they were getting used to the concept of it but as soon as they got into the swing of the game they were racing up and down the court, getting into space and scoring great goals. There were also some amazing saves by the goalkeepers! They all seemed to really enjoy it and were keen to play more. This task was a great test as it threw us into the deep end. We were doing things that we had only just learnt and applying them into a real situation. Altogether the whole day was a fantastic experience. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I can’t wait to promote the sport more in our school with the other handball leaders We will be setting up a handball club soon. It is an easy and enjoyable sport and anyone can play it. So if it sounds interesting to you then keep your eyes and ears open. Declan | |

| No | Fantastic news about Jessie Foster's performance at the British Gas National Age Group Swimming Championships, Sheffield in July. Jessie won gold in the 12 year old girls 200m breaststroke! Last year Jessie qualified for Nationals in 2 events and made one final finishing in 5th place. This year Jessie qualified in 4 events and added both Individual Medley events to her programme, making finals in all of her races. Jessie won her first National Gold medal in the 200 breaststroke in a 10 sec PB of 2.39.2, to become one of the world's fastest 12 years old 200m breaststrokers. Jessie won the race by more than a body length and showed the whole pool her exceptional skills and stroke control over the four lengths. In the 100 event, Jessie missed out on her second Gold medal by a mere 0.04 sec on the final touch and took the silver in a brilliant 1.16.2. After 3 solid days of hard racing Jessie swam in the 400 Individual Medley in the last day, showing her endurance and determination to finish a very respectable 6th in a 5.18.6. Jessie trains hard at Street Swimming Club and deserves our congratulations. An amazing achievement! | |
