Welcome to the Mathematics department website. We hope that this section will provide an insight into our aims and objectives and also give examples of the variety of activities we offer. You will find links to the maths department handbook, schemes of work, a list of useful maths websites and news from the UKMT Maths Challenges along with information about certificate winners.
Mathematics contributes to the school curriculum by developing students’ abilities to calculate; to reason logically, algebraically, and geometrically; to solve problems and to handle data. Mathematics is important for students in many other areas of study, particularly Science and Technology. It is also important in everyday living, in many forms of employment, and in public decision-making. As a subject in its own right, Mathematics presents frequent opportunities for creativity especially when a problem is solved for the first time or when hidden connections become apparent.
It is our aim to encourage our students to develop:-
A positive attitude to mathematics which encourages confidence and enjoyment
A feel for numbers, being able to carry out calculations and understand the significance of the results obtained
An understanding of the part which mathematics plays in the world around them
A willingness and ability to work independently and co-operatively and to produce skills to investigate mathematical ideas
An ability to understand mathematical ideas and to communicate them in a variety of ways
An ability to use mathematics across the curriculum and to acquire a foundation appropriate to their further study.
