Welcome to St Augustine's English Department!
English is at the heart of all students' work and the Department aims to provide each student with the opportunity to develop their communication skills within the context of a supportive learning environment. The English Department is committed to helping ALL students to realise their potential and to see that they can help others to achieve theirs too.
During their work in English, students will be encouraged to develop an appreciation of a range of rich and diverse texts from around the world and from different eras. Exploring literary, non-literary and spoken texts enables students to appreciate how writers carefully craft their texts. Through analysis of their own and others' work, students are encouraged to develop their skills of self-reflection and evaluation, allowing them to see how they can improve the quality of their work.

A highly successful Department, the English teachers at St Augustine's are generous with their time In recent years, as well as providing study workshops as students prepare for public examinations, extra-curricular activiites have included: numerous trips to local and national theatre productions; attendance at lectures and seminars; hosting travelling theatre companies; inviting published authors to address students; participation in regional public speaking competitions.
It is the English Department's belief that our students appreciate the power of the spoken and written word. Their English lessons will equip them with the skills they will need to take up their roles as responsible citizens whose voices can be used to shape the future of the world in which we will all share.
