 Introduction

Department Mission Statement

To engender academic success by treating students as young adults within a Christian and business-like environment – characterised by Enterprise, Expectation and Enjoyment.  Our approach recognises the moral context of business and economic decisions, and the dynamic nature of our subject.  To this end, our teaching methods are flexible and innovative.  We adopt a ‘kaizen’ approach to quality and actively encourage students to strive for a ‘WOW!’ factor in their work.  We continuously seek to foster business links on a local, national and European level.

Aims & Values: How do we achieve our mission?

We achieve our mission by:

creating an enjoyable working atmosphere in which high expectations are clearly conveyed
using a wide variety of teaching strategies
encouraging students to be proactive and to take ownership of their work
exploiting opportunities to develop students’ self-confidence and presentation skills
regularly updating our resources and maintaining awareness of the latest thinking in our subject
rewarding initiative, creativity, rigorous analysis and critical thinking in our assessment
encouraging consideration of and debate about the moral aspects of business and economic decisions
providing opportunities to gain first-hand experience of running a business
organising regular visits to business and talks by guest speakers

Our courses in Business Studies and Economics encourage students to:

make effective use of relevant terminology, concepts and methods, and recognise the strengths and limitations of the ideas used
apply their knowledge and critical understanding to current issues and problems in a wide range of appropriate contexts;
distinguish between facts and opinions and evaluate qualitative and quantitative data in order to help build arguments and make informed judgements;
appreciate the perspectives of a range of stakeholders in relation to the environment, individuals, government and enterprise.
