March comes from the Roman word 'Martius' which was originally the first month of the Roman calendar and was named after Mars, the god of war.

The Anglo Saxons called the month Hlyd which means stormy month, or Hraed monath which means rugged month.

One of the flowers most associated with March is the narcissus (wild daffodil).  It is also known as the Lent Lily because it blooms in early Spring and the blooms usually drop before Easter.  It became a popular Welsh symbol in the 19th Century.

Six Choses d'Angleterre
Following the school's partnership with Ecole Primaire Henri Pellet in Tours, each school is going to send the other a box containing six objects which they feel best encapsulate their national.  These are some of the boxes and items which have been chosen by our children to represent England's history, culture and traditions.

Youth Action Wiltshire is this year's chosen school charity.  It supports young people aged 5-25 years.  It works with youth clubs and young people in Wiltshire and Swindon, providing activities to improve physical and mental health.  It also provides a range of services for young carers who look after seriously ill or disabled family members.   Our PTFA will be donating money raised from our Bags2School campaign to the charity.  The collection will be running from 22nd March to 28th April.  If you have any unwanted clothing/bedding/handbags or shoes which you would like to donate, please bring them along to the school (in a bin bag) for the collection.

World Book Day is a worldwide celebration of books and reading and is marked in over 100 countries around the world.  It originated in Catalonia where roses and books were given as gifts to loved ones on St George's Day - a tradition started over 80 years ago.  Every child will receive a World Book Day £1 book token which can be redeemed for any book or audiobook or it can be exchanged for one of the specially printed £1 books below which are available from participating bookshops.

                 

Devizes Library will be celebrating with 'A Big Bear Hunt' from 4.00 to 4.30 p.m.
with lots of bear stories and activities for 4 to 8 year olds for free.

CLASS 2'S GOLDEN WORSHIP

Class 2's Golden Worship was a celebration of Mothering Sunday.  The children sang and shared pictures that they had drawn of their mothers and talked about some of the ways that other countries celebrate Mothers' Day.  During the service parents were presented with flowers and simnel cakes.  Thank you to all of the parents who were able to join us.
