How the School is Governed

The Governing Body of Walwayne Court Primary School

The Governing Body of Walwayne Court Primary School are a group of volunteers who work in partnership with the Headteacher and staff, providing support and constructive challenge in order to achieve the best possible education for our pupils.  The Governing Body has a general responsibility for the strategic management of the school but does not take detailed decisions about the day to day running of the school – that is the function of the Headteacher.

Our Governing Body comprises a combination of:

5 Parent Governors who have a child at the school at the time of election.
3 LA Governors who are appointed by the Local Authority.
3 Staff Governors (including the Headteacher).
4 Community Governors who are people other than the above but who have an interest in the school.

We also have Associate Governors who are invited to join the Governing Body for their particular expertise.  They have no voting rights but full access to all documentation and can also sit on committees.

The work of the Governing Body has a direct effect on the education and wellbeing of the pupils and can assist in improving standards throughout the school.  To make this more manageable we currently operate four committees with specific areas of responsibility.

These committees are:

  • The Standards, Assessment & Curriculum Committee
  • The Finance & Staffing Committee
  • The Premises, Health & Safety Committee, and
  • The Children, Parents & Community Committee

Each committee has its own terms of reference which are agreed by the Full Governing Body.  The committees report back to the Full Governing Body after each of their meetings.

There are also working groups set up from time to time to look at a particular project.  Some of the current or most recent include:

  • School meals
  • A children’s kitchen
  • School allotments
  • Parent and pupil surveys

Key roles for the governing body and the committees are:

  • Ensuring the National Curriculum is delivered and publishing the results of NC Assessment tests.
  • Promoting a high standard of education by setting yearly targets for pupil attainment.
  • Safeguarding children.
  • Managing the school’s budget, including making decisions on staffing pay and other expenditure.
  • Personnel matters including appointing the Headteacher and other senior staff.
  • Maintenance of buildings and grounds.
  • Formulating and reviewing school policies.
The full Governing Body meets once a term, as do the Committees.  Extra meetings are called as required.
