SMTV celebrate UNICEF - Day for change 2012Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

On Friday 3rd February 2012, SMTV supported UNICEF’s Day for Change.  The event was a further opportunity for the children to learn about children in other parts of the world and further develop themselves as global citizens.

We celebrated Day for a Change by changing our school uniform for the day.  The theme for the change was sport so all children dressed in their sport clothes for the day or came dressed as a sports personality.  They donated 50p to UNICEF!  Some classes will also took part in extra sport activities and linked sport to the United Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

Photos of the children celebrating day for a change can be seen in the gallery on this page and on the school gallery on the main website.

Being a Pupil Evaluator by Molly & Emily (year 5)

St Mary’s Pupil Evaluators have completed an investigation to see how everyone in our school learns to be a global citizen.  We were split into 4 groups of three and each group had a special job.

Group 1 – observing classrooms and around the school

Group 2 – Survey children, staff and families

Group 3 – Interview children, staff and families

Group 4 – Photograph and video parts of the school

6 children completed a learning walk through the school and observed teaching and learning, playtimes and collective worship.  We found out that most children in the school were independent and could select their own resources for learning, whatever their age.

We have just had our last meeting with Peter Barton and we told him what we found out.  He was very impressed with our investigation.  We also met Louise from DEED and she enjoyed finding out about how we learn to be global citizens in our school.

Photographs of our feedback can be found in the gallery.

To develop the link with Mitra Primary School and to develop the children’s’ understanding of global citizenship, the Rights Respecting Schools Steering Group have a produced a task to be completed by all families at home with their child/ren.  The completed work will form part of an activity pack which will be taken to Nepal by Mrs Jenkins and Mrs Parsons in January 2012.  Instructions for the task have been added to the document library.

A summary of the task:
Using the list of ‘Life in North Dorset’, draw pictures on each puzzle piece to represent the aspect for your life in North Dorset for you and your family.  For example, homes – draw a picture of your house.  Colour the pictures in.

‘Life in North Dorset’ to illustrate on the puzzle pieces (if applicable):

  • Food and drink
  • House
  • Travel and transport
  • Jobs
  • Games/leisure/hobbies
  • Pets
  • Place of worship
  • Jobs in the family
  • People in your family – brother/sister

Cut out the 8 jigsaw piece puzzle and stick the pieces onto the outline of the child.  You can make your outline as interesting as you wish. You can add real pictures or a mixture.  You may like to include a family picture?  Add your family name in the title box.

Can you link any of your pictures to the UNCRC?  Add the article number onto the picture if you can.

The Rights Steering Group will also be creating a picture map of the local area to add to the homework task.  A group of children, with Mrs Lloyd, Mrs Stenner and Mrs Stevens are going for a walk around Gillingham to take pictures of our local area to add to the map.

Wow...thank you to all the families who completed the Rights Homework during the holidays, over half the school families completed it.  The work looks amazing and it will soon be on display in the school hall for you all to look at.  The aim of the homework was to share the UNCRC with families and it looks like the aim was achieved, well done!
