Rights Respecting School

We Are A Rights Respecting School

 What we are doing

I am delighted to tell you that Mr. Mike Hilary, County Inspector, judged our school to be a Rights Respecting School on Friday 5th February.
These are some highlights of our journey.

With the children we agreed some rights and responsibilities for our school. These were based on some of the articles in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Personalised posters illustrating these rights and responsibilities were designed with photographs of our own children. We are grateful to Mr Penn (Chloe Y1, Leah YR) for taking the photographs and to Mr Ball (Summer Y2) for the production of the posters.

The children in Year 4 (08–09) agreed a questionnaire that focus groups from each year group answered. Amongst other things, children discussed their feelings about school, their responsibilities and what they learned about children who live in different countries. Parents also completed a questionnaire about how their children were treated in school. As a result of the feedback, the format of the School Council has changed and meetings have taken place monthly.

Staff and children visited Ferndown First School and Parley First School to share ideas about becoming a Rights Respecting School. We then hosted a learning walk.

Children agreed ideas for individual Class Charters and these are on display in the classrooms. Each class then considered a right and responsibility in more detail and were inspired to produce paintings, act out drama sketches and even create a rap.

A meeting for parents to explain our work took place in February ’10. Members of the local community were also invited.
