Our theme for next week is "Carrying the Torch" and I am sure you are following its progress around the UK. A reminder that, while the torch is not coming very near to Staple Hill or Kingswood, it will be going through Longwell Green and Hanham (amongst other places) on Tuesday evening. It is a real historical moment and I would encourage you to take your children to see it pass through.

Message from the Headteacher, Friday 30th March 2012: Wow!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

What an amazing week at the school! I hope you have had a look at the photos of our intrepid campers who have been swinging, climbing, rowing, quad-biking, and many other activities (maybe even sleeping!) at PGL Boreatton Park this week. I’m sure your children (who you have missed dearly) will come back full of many exciting tales to tell, and a huge bag of washing. I am sure you will join me in thanking Ms Williams, Mrs Cox, Mrs Say and Mr Lazenby for looking after the group– we wish them a very well earned holiday.

Those of you fortunate enough to come to our Woodpeckers and Bats’ Spring Concert, “Prodigal Rock” saw just how wonderful our children are; the level of confidence and enjoyment was clearly evident and the singing and acting was outstanding! We have true stars in the school, and this shone through during the performance. Many thanks to Mrs Board and to Mrs Butter and Ms Walsh for their organisation of such a memorable event.

And talking of memorable events, Woodpeckers had their WOW days this week; these are themed days to inspire the children to write (in line with our school priority to give the children an enjoyment of writing). On Wednesday, I went in to find a group of evacuee children being taught in rows as the children focussed on World War 2; the costumes were very impressive (including Mrs Board’s!) as you can see in the photos outside their classroom. Today, I have bumped into a few Mad Scientists in Woodpeckers as they enjoy a second WOW day with Mrs Butter.

On a personal note, I have been very touched by the number of you who have asked after my well being, and have welcomed me back. I realise just how much I have missed being a part of the magical things that happen at the Tynings School over the last 6 months. Mrs Clark and Mrs Hannam, with the support of Mrs Fox and the brilliant Tynings team, have moved the school forward a huge amount since September and I am very grateful to them for all they have achieved.

So, we come to the end of Term 4 – I wish you all a very happy Easter or Spring break, and look forward to carrying on our CLEAR and BRIGHT journey next term – see you on the 16th April.

The Tynings Choir Sing Again!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

The Tynings School Choir have been asked by Staple Hill Methodist Church if they would like to support The New Harmony Ladies’ Choir by singing a selection of their songs for an evening’s concert on:

  • Saturday 21st April

  • 7.30 start
It would be lovely if we could supply as large a choir as we did for the Barbican, or even larger .
ALL JUNIOR children can choose to “Sing out” and it would be great if we had a few more first timers singing with us this time.
The church organisers have offered a special discount to all supporters of the school choir, so instead of £6 for tickets, you only pay £3; a real bargain as it also includes refreshments. These will be only available on the door but as the church is very big there will be plenty of room for everyone. I would like to know in advance; approximately how many children and supporting adults will be attending the concert.

These reduced priced tickets are only available with a Tynings School Sticker Stamp, which I will send to you upon your return of your ticket request and indication that your child is singing out on this occasion.
This time I would like the children to wear school uniform, including their red Tynings sweatshirts or cardigans and their smart school shoes and we will try to recreate the “Barbican sound” for those who were unable to either sing on the day or come and join us in the audience.

Thank you so much for all your support; the children are real ambassadors for The Tynings School.
    Mrs Cottee

Message from the Acting Headteacher, Friday 23rd March 2012: Welcome to Ancient Greece!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

If you are a parent of a child in Otter class and were lucky enough to be able to come in to school this morning I am sure, like me, you will have been amazed by the talent of your children! Otter class entertained us this morning with a time travelling treat – transporting us back to ancient Greece and showcasing everything they have been learning about this term. Thank you to everyone in Otters and Miss Cox for all your hard work.

Every child should have come home with an important letter last night informing you that we are extremely happy to be welcoming Mr Yates back to the Tynings. Mr Yates will be back with us from Monday. The letter also explained that we are very pleased that Mrs Hannam will be remaining with us, as Rabbit’s class teacher, for the remainder of this academic year.

We also have some exciting news about developments to our school building
and grounds. Preparations need to be made to the classes and outdoor space that will become our two Year 1 classrooms from September 2012. On Friday 30th March, work will begin on creating an outdoor learning space that can be accessed from the current Year 2 and old Year 4 classroom. We are hoping that work will be completed during the Easter holidays to minimise any
disruption to school life. However, the area will be cordoned off on Friday 30th March as the builders would like to start some ground work as soon as possible. This does mean that on the 30th, if you are coming into the school grounds with a buggy you will need to enter school via the Jubilee Road entrance as the ramp will be out of use. We are hoping that this will only apply on Friday 30th March. There is always a possibility that work could take longer than estimated and access to the playground from the front gate could be limited for the first week of Term 5. If you think this may cause you a problem, and you are not able to make use of the Jubilee Road entrance, please come and let us know as soon as possible so we can find an alternative solution. Year 2 parents will be pleased to hear that the development of this space means your children will benefit from an outdoor learning area during the Summer Terms – an issue that I know was of concern to a number of parents with the moving of the Year 2 classroom.

Message from the Acting Head, Friday 16th March 2012: Sing up!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Apologies for the lack of newsletter last week. We had a computer virus on our system that was still being tackled on Monday.A huge well done and thank you to all the children who were such brilliant ambassadors of the Tynings School on Tuesday 6th March. Our children filled the Barbican Theatre, London, with their beautiful singing and, although we didn't come first, I think everyone who was in the audience would agree that they sang their hearts out and made us all very proud. There were over 130 choirs that entered the competition and we were one of only 12, in the youngest age category, picked to perform in the final. I also have to commend the children for their impeccable behaviour. Through the whole, very long, day, (we didn't return to school until past midnight) we didn't hear one moan or complaint from any child - you were all brilliant, thank you for making it such a memorable day. We have a wonderful selection of photographs that map out the whole day, courtesy of Mrs Wright, a Music Teaching and Learning Advisor, who accompanied us on the day. These photos will be available to view on our website in the next week or so. Mrs Wright has also asked us to pass on a special thank you to the children, in a card received with the photographs Mrs Wright says, “thank you for letting me be part of your very special day in London. I thought you were a credit to your school and South Gloucestershire. Well done everyone!”Another big well done and thank you needs to go to Falcon class who led our assembly on the afternoon of Friday 9th March. The children worked hard to put the assembly together themselves and amazed us with their movie making skills. The assembly was almost sabotaged by the unwelcome computer virus but, due to Miss William's keeping a very cool head, we were able to enjoy everything they had planned. As I write this, the children in Rabbit class will be having a wonderful time at the Museum of Welsh Life, St Fagans. They have been learning about houses and homes and will be seeing a whole range of different buildings from the past on their visit. I am sure they will have lots of exciting things to tell us about their visit when they return.

We awarded our first ‘Writer of the Week’ certificates in assembly this morning. One child from every class, hedgehogs and squirrels and all the way up to Falcons, was chosen to have their hard work in writing celebrated. Well done to Iris, Harvey, Mani, James, Alex, Adam, Olivia and Harriet.
As part of our Platinum ‘Sing up’ award we have a commitment to sharing our love of singing with the wider community and were joined today by children from St Stephen’s Junior and Staple Hill Primary School in a celebration of national ‘Sing up’ day at Staple Hill Methodist church. All children in KS2 and Deer class were involved at the church, with Rabbits, Squirrels and Hedgehogs sharing in their own ‘sing up’ celebration back at school. Thank you to all the parents who were able to help walk the children to and from the church.

Well done to all the children in Squirrel and Rabbit class this week. Both classes have worked so hard that they earned a class treat. Over the course of Wednesday and Thursday the school seemed filled with children (and quite a few teachers) dressed in pyjamas and dressing gowns!

Message from the Acting Head, Friday 24th February 2012: Good to be MeUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Our assembly theme this term is ‘Good to be me’. Throughout the term the focus during circle times and assemblies will be the things that make the children special and unique.

We have started the new term by introducing some new certificates to celebrate writing achievement across the school Each class teacher will be choosing a member of their class to be named ‘writer of the week’ and certificates will be given during our Friday assemblies. At the end of each term we will be handing out a special award ‘writer of the term’ to one child in each class. We are really proud of the children in the photo above who are the first to be named ‘writer of the term’ by their class teachers. Their amazing writing will be on display in the school entrance hall.

We were also really proud of our ‘story club’ members this morning – they received certificates for the wonderful work they have produced over the last term and we really enjoyed sharing some of their stories.

National Sing up Day Friday 2nd March at Staple Hill Methodist ChurchUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

As part of our programme as a Platinum Sing up school we are committed to spreading our love of singing.

We have arranged to meet with St Stephen’s Junior School and Staple Hill Primary so we can all not only sing together but listen to each other, using a superb community space. The 50 children representing the school at the barbican on March 6th will sing one song together as a last minute rehearsal!

We aim to leave school just after lunch, by 1.20pm to arrive at the church by 1.45pm, to begin our sharing concert by 2pm and leave to return to school by 3pm. (There is a possibility we may arrive back at school a little after 3.10pm.)

We are taking all the junior classes plus Deer class from the infants; in fact they will sing 2 songs on their own.
We need parents and carers to help walk the children safely to the church and back again, so if you are able to help, please let your child’s class teacher know. You may, of course, stay and listen to the concert, using the upstairs space.

Thank you to the PSFA for organising the very successful Valentines Disco on Thursday evening. The children had a great time dancing (in between eating lots of sweets and other delicious snacks!) and it was a great way to end Term 3.

We now know that Mr Yates is unlikely to be back at school until the start of Term 5. This will mean that I will continue in the role of Acting Head and Mrs Hannam will remain as Year 1 teacher and Assistant Head.
Year 1 parents are also aware that Ms McCormick has been absent for a while now due to a knee injury, she has had surgery but has a long recovery period still ahead of her and we will let you know when she is able to return to class. Happily, we are still able to employ Mr Lazenby on a Thursday to teach the children.

We wish both Mr Yates and Ms McCormick a speedy recovery and hope to see them both back at school soon.

I hope everyone has a great half term break. We look forward to seeing you all again for the start of Term 5, Monday 20th February.

Unfortunately we lost our first game 3-0, our second game we drew 1-1 (good goal by Lauren,) our last game we lost 4-0. Even though we lost most of our games, we enjoyed playing lots; but most importantly we tried our best. We all worked as a team and had a great time.

Yummy Bat Sandwiches!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Bat class made sandwiches on Monday to support their work in literacy and Design and Technology. These are two pieces of work from the class(although there were lots more!):

Instructions for making a sandwich

1. First wash your hands at the sink with warm water and soap, so that you don’t get germs in your sandwiches.

2. Then get all of the ingredients you need like chicken, cucumber, green and purple lettuce and all of the equipment you need to make tasty sandwiches.

3. Wipe clean your table or work surface so you don’t get ill when you eat your sandwich, but don’t get it too wet or your sandwich will taste like soap! You can put nearly anything into your sandwich but don’t forget to butter your bread first.

4. Fold the bread overand cut it into quarters.

5. Enjoy your tasty sandwich!

By Helena

A recount of our experience making a sandwich:

First of all the girls hand to put their hair up in the classroom, to stop hair getting in the food.
Then we all had to go to the sink to wash our hands with soap and warm water to stop germs getting in the sandwiches.
Next we had to prepare the fillings, this is what food we wanted like cheese, ham, chicken, pepper, tomato and bread.
After we had prepared our food we spread butter on our bread and then filled the sandwich with our chosen filling.
Finally we cut them in half and ate the sandwich.

Pinocchio - A Five Star Show - review by Sophie (Falcon Class)Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Today, (Thursday the 2nd of Feb) The M&M Theatre ProductionTeam kindly visited the Tynings school to perform their brandnew show, The adventures of Pinocchio. I think it’s fair to say that all of the children thoroughly enjoyed watching this play, despite some of the younger children found the darkness a bit daunting at the start.
Pinocchio is based on a toymaker, Chippeto, who has always longed for a son. All of the toys he made were little ones and not as good as other toymakers. But one magical day, the Blue fairycame and granted his wish by giving him a big log. The toymaker worked really hard to make this puppet, as he intended to call it his son. Once the puppet was made, Chippeto went to bed. That very night, the Blue fairy turned the puppet to life. Chippeto decided to name the puppet Pinocchio. I won’t tell you anymore, so you can find out yourself! The story teaches the audience right or wrong.

This outstanding show took all of the children and adults watching into a magical, emotional fairytale world. During the performance, all of the children realised how lucky they were to have all of these talented people come into their school and perform to them. There was a huge range of talent on display in this magical production earlier today. I asked Phoebe (Falcons) what she thought of it, “They planned it very well, but the comedy wasn’t as good, because It wasn’t exactly funny for the older ones, but apart from that, it was brilliant." Also, mus
ic was good. Also, a man performed a magical mind reading elusion, involving one of the teachers watching. If you have not yet seen this production, me and anyone in the Tynings school would highly recommend it.

Dinner MoneyUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Thank you to all parents who have been sending dinner money in on a Monday, in an envelope with your child’s name, the days they wish to have lunch, the correct money. It is much appreciated.

There are procedures for late/arrears dinner monies which have been updated, these are:

  • Children will be asked to check their bag for dinner money first

  • If no money has been sent in by Thursday parents will be contacted by text/phone to

    send in the dinner money

  • If arrears go over £10 parents will be advised that no lunch will be provided and that a

sandwich lunch must be provided by the parent until the arrears monies have been paid

We hope you understand the updated procedures of collecting dinner money and would like to reassure parents that if you have any difficulty in paying please come to the office. We are here to help! We would also like parents to know that if a child came to school with no lunch, one would be given to them.

    Thank you

Message from the Acting Head, Friday 27th January 2012: Fire, Fire!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Well done and thank you to Mrs McNeil and the Deer class for such a wonderful assembly this morning. They have been learning all about the Fire of London and used what they have learnt to put together an extremely entertaining performance.

This week saw the first of our class visits to Staple Hill library. Mrs Board and the Woodpeckers had a very informative and enjoyable visit led by the librarian. Each class will have the opportunity to visit the library over the next few terms. Please note that next week’s visit by Bats has been postponed until later next term (a date will follow shortly).

We have been trialling a range of ‘Tynings’ backpacks in school recently in response to parents requests. Unfortunately we have decided not to purchase any further backpacks at this current time. The smaller, KS1 backpacks have not been popular with children and the larger, more popular, KS2 backpacks are proving too large for the classroom! This does not mean we are not allowing any backpacks that are already in use but we, as a school, will not be selling any more.

Message from the Acting Head, Friday 20th January 2012: GenerosityUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Our Assembly theme week has been ‘Generosity’. We have celebrated the generosity shown by our children in their sharing of time and talents to help raise money for good causes. We were visited on Monday by a representative from St Peter’s Hospice, to thank us for supporting their fundraising, and on Tuesday a visitor from Barnardo’s came to tell us all about a new and exciting fundraiser that we are hoping the children will enjoy supporting. All children, from Rabbits to Falcons, were given the information on Barnardo’s ‘Care and Share’ challenge earlier this week.

The children have, as always, had a very busy week of learning. A few examples of the learning experiences our children have been involved in this week include - Otters visiting Mangotsfield school on Tuesday to see the Exploredome, Otters and Falcons were involved in a music workshop on Wednesday afternoon, and to finish the week, Rabbits invited their parents to visit their classroom toy museum.

Over the next few terms all of our children will have the opportunity to visit the Staple Hill library. We have visited the library in past years and it is always an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. The first class to visit will be the Woodpeckers on the afternoon of Tuesday 24th January. As this is a local visit, we will not be sending home individual permission slips, so if you are not happy for you child to participate in their class’s visit, please inform your child’s teacher. We will let you know of the other visit dates as we move through the terms.

I would like to say a great big well done and thank you to our Rabbit class and Mrs Hannam. If you were lucky enough to be in the audience for their class assembly this morning I am sure you will agree that their story telling, dancing and singing was delightful. What a great way to show us all the work they have been doing as part of their ‘Toys’ topic. Well done Rabbits! Thank you also to the parents who attended our family forum on Thursday morning. I know Mrs Fox was really pleased to have the opportunity to meet and talk with you. If you have not attended our family forums in the past, we do hold them regularly and they are a great chance for you to discuss with us issues that are important to you – and therefore important to us (and we have tea and biscuits!). We have had a great response from our request for children who would like to be part of the choir for the Barnardos competition. With so many children returning their slips, we would love to be able to take everyone but unfortunately the competition rules mean that are only able to take 50 children. Mrs Cottee will be sending letters out shortly to the children who have been lucky enough to secure a place in the choir for this event. If your child is one of the 50, you will also receive details of how you can purchase tickets if you wish to watch the performance. We are not able to purchase these tickets on your behalf, you will need to contact the Barbican theatre directly. (We are also unable to be involved in any organisation of travel arrangements for parents wishing to travel to London on the 6th March.) We will send out further updates on specific details for the children when final arrangements have been made.

I was so pleased to receive so many slips asking to be part of the Tynings first ever competition choir. I have only 50 places and nearly 60 children want to be part of this so unfortunately there are 9 disappointed Bats who sent in 26 applications! Children who are part of the choir this time will have received a letter today confirming a place and details of tickets for parents and carers who wish to travel to London.

Thank you so much for your continued support.

A very Happy New Year from the Tynings School PSFA!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
We’d like to start the year by saying ‘thank you very much’ to everyone, for their support with the various Christmas fund-raising efforts. As always, the main event was the Fayre. It was very much enjoyed by all, and we’d like to say a huge thank you to those who helped both beforehand and on the night. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough helpers and had to cancel a few stalls. Despite this, we managed to raise over £1,700. The Christmas Shop was very popular this year. The children really enjoyed being able to come to the stall and choose gifts for someone at home. This raised over £330.

We also ran a Christmas Card fund-raiser. This was a bit last minute, for which we apologise. Nevertheless, there was a good level of interest and we managed to raise over £140.

In the Autumn the PSFA donated £250 towards the purchase of new books for the school. There was also the usual annual gift of money for each class, to spend on what they needed most (£100 per class). Breakfast club received £50. The Christmas gift was £25 per class. We are still saving up to buy something big for the whole school, hopefully this academic year!

So, now to 2012! The PSFA is not only about events for the kids – we are also keen to run events to involve the adults. It is a great way to get to know some of the other parents in the school and to have some fun. To this end, we are organising a Beetle Drive. The provisional date for this evening (adult only) event is Friday 27th January 2012. The cost will be £5 per ticket (to be purchased in advance) and you are all welcome. There will be a Ploughman’s Supper provided and, if no bar is available, you will be able to bring your own alcohol with you. Tickets should be on sale the week of the 16th January. More information on this and other upcoming events soon.

Other provisional dates for your new calendars include:
  • 9th February 2012 – Valentine Disco
  • 24th March 2012 – Tabletop Sale
  • 31st May 2012 - Golden Jubilee Celebration
  • 6th July 2012 – Olympic Summer Fayre

Message from the Acting Head, Friday 6th January 2012: Happy New YearUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Welcome to a new year at the Tynings School. I would like to start by saying how brilliantly the children have come back to school and how lovely it is to be back at school with them after my maternity leave. As you are aware, Mr Yates is currently unwell and unfortunately is still awaiting surgery that will enable him to return to work. We know he will not be returning for the duration of this term and will keep you updated when we know more. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him well and back at school soon. Plans that were put in place before Christmas will ensure the smooth running of the school. I have taken on the role of Acting Headteacher, with the support of Mrs Fox. Mrs Hannam will continue to teach in Year 1 with the added role of Assistant Headteacher.

Over the holidays I received two letters congratulating and thanking the children for their hard work before Christmas. The first was from St Peter’s Hospice, who have thanked us for raising over £400 for their charity during our visit to the Galleries, Broadmead. They have already asked us if we would like to sing again next year! The second was a lovely letter from a guest of a parent who attended our Reception Nativity play, thanking the children and staff for their wonderful performance, ‘the children’s enthusiasm and happiness shone through the story of the first Christmas’.

If you have a child in KS2, you will have received a separate letter tonight explaining some really exciting news we have just received. Our choir was entered, by Mrs Cottee, into a national competition organised by Barnardo’s. We have been selected as finalists and invited to sing before the judges in a special concert at the Barbican Theatre in London. We are extremely proud of this opportunity to represent our school, and South Gloucestershire, in this National event. The only disappointment is that we are only able to take 50 of our children along with us – if your child is interested in being part of this choir event then please return the reply slip on Monday morning. The letter includes a few more details and we will update you will more information as we receive it.

Message from the (Acting) Head, Friday 9th December 2011: Ho, ho ho!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Well Christmas is certainly in the air at the Tynings. The tree kindly donated by Mrs Johns is decorated and looking beautiful. ‘Humph the Camel’ Nativity performances have been delivered by Rabbit and Deer Class. They looked brilliant in their costumes, they spoke clearly and sang beautifully and nobody in the audiencefelt ‘Humph’ by the end of the performance.

I must also congratulate the children who have sung in the Choir this year. They sang with the Bristol Male Voice Choir on Saturday night and the reports have all been glowing. They were real ambassadors for theschool and should be really proud of how well they did. I have just returned from taking the Choir to Broadmead Shopping Centre where the children sang, ably led by Mrs. Cottee. They sang in aid of St. Peter’s Hospice and we hope that we helped them raise lots of money. We must also thank Stevens coaches whoprovided us with transport free of charge. It meant that we could take lots of children and fill the Galleries with our singing. Thank you to all of the parents who have supported us in these events. Just so you haveplenty of warning, we have already been booked for next year!

Rabbit and Deer class have also been very busy this week making tasty and healthy sandwiches supported by staff from Warburtons. The children looked brilliant in aprons and blue hair nets and enjoyed spreading, cutting and finally eating the sandwiches that they had made.
I hope to see many of you at Christmas on the Hill. We will be meeting at the WDM building at 1.15 and then the children will be singing songs from ‘Humph the Camel’ at the British Legion. Please come wearing hats orin Fancy dress if you want to enter the competition.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas.

Message from the (Acting) Head, Friday 2nd December: Friends EverywhereUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

We welcomed 3 European friends to the school this week. Lena and Suzanne came to see us from Sweden and Mike came from Poland. They spent the day with us on Monday and they had a very thorough guided tour led by the School Councillors from Falcon and Otter Class. They heard us sing in assembly and spent time in classrooms during the afternoon. On Tuesday evening they also came to meet staff and governors and we had a games evening. Mike was in the winning team and you may have noticed Miss Cox sporting her medal that she won for coming second. We also spent time with our friends from Old Sodbury and together we have planned some fantastic activities and worked on making our bid for funding so we canvisit our new friends in Sweden and Poland. We will inform you whether we are successful as soon as weknow.

Woodpeckers did their class service today and taught us all about Henry the VIIIth and how he treated his wives. They also shared lots of their fantastic writing. Well done to them all.
I must also say well done to all the children who got certificates today for walking to school on Tuesdaysand collecting 5 or more stamps. If you haven’t yet handed in your card, please do and then you can be entered into the prize draw that we will be doing next week. Good luck and keep walking and biking.

We will be holding our Christmas Fayre this evening and it will be great to see you there. The school islooking very festive so thank you to all of you who have worked so hard putting up decorations andbringing lots of Christmas cheer to the school.
There has been a suggestion from the Green Team that some of you might like to write a Christmasmessage to your class rather than sending them all an individual card. If you do write a message for yourclass or the whole school we will display it in the front entrance hall so that everyone can read it.

Please note all the other Christmas celebrations that are happening over the next few weeks, there is a listbelow.

Message from the Head, Friday 23rd September: DEMOCRACY IN ACTIONUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
It’s been a very democratic week at The Tynings School as children have been voting in our annual School Council elections. I would like to say a very big “thank you” to Megan and Evan in Falcons who have done a wonderful job running the elections. At this point in time, they still have the job of counting votes, and we will publish the names of the new school council on the website this evening. I would also like to take the opportunity to say “thank you” to the old school councillors who worked very hard last year to make their class’ voices heard.
As part of our “have your say” week, we had a visit from Councillor Mike Drew, the chair of South Gloucestershire Council, who spoke to our older children about the importance of democracy.
I’d like to remind you of our “21st Century” methods of communicating news to you, and some of the changes that will be taking place soon; please see the information in the news section to keep up to date. I am very pleased that, out of all of our mums, dads and carers, only one person is not receiving text messages from the school (and we are encouraging that person to get on board). If you have any questions about information being emailed or texted, please see Mrs Mundy (our text “guru”!).
You will also find information in Newsletter 3 about our clubs that will be offered at the school for the first half of the year. There may be other clubs that tale place during the course of the year that are not on this list; some may be run by external organisations and have a charge attached (such as Wendy Britton’s football club) – we will provide details of these clubs as and when.
I’d like to draw your attention to two policies which I have uploaded to the school website - please look particularly at 66a: Images Policy: Information for parents and 78c: The Tynings School Complaints Procedure. In the past we have sent these home at the start of each year, however with the new website, you have access to them at all times. Our attendance policy and leaflet (which we usually send out within the first few weeks) are not attached as we are looking at making some changes that will bring us in line with the majority of our local schools; we will share this with you when it has been ratified. As policies are ratified, you can find them on the school website, along with any other relevant documentation. Finally, we have not fully agreed dates for some of our events this term, but will get a list out to you as soon as we have.
Have a great week

SINGING @ THE SING UP PLATINUM TYNINGS SCHOOLUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Once again The Tynings School have been invited to sing at many different venues. I have accepted two special invitations and would like to remind ALL junior children they are welcome to come along and sing:
  • Wednesday 12th October @ 5pm: We have been given a 20 minute slot as part of Bristol’s Festival of Song, to sing at The Colston Hall, in the reception area downstairs. This is a lovely place to sing and promote The Tynings as a singing school. Platinum tee shirts will be provided. I hope to involve the children in choosing the songs to perform so come along and support us as we sing!
  • Saturday 3rd December @ 7pm: We have been invited to sing as guests of The Bristol Male Voice Choir, and will have two 20 minute slots to fill with the possibility of a joint song with the adult choir. Venue still to be confirmed but I know the organisers are looking for a local church. All parents, carers, grandparents and family friends are welcome to join us. More details to follow but please put this date in your diary.

If your child is able to come along and sing, please click here to send me a message (or send a letter to me via the school office) with the information I have listed below so I know who is coming to sing:
  • name of child;
  • class;
  • which concert your child will be coming to (both would be great!).

If you have any queries please contact me as above.Thank you so much for your support.

Cycling Lands End to John O'Groats - a report by Miss Ella PorteousUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Two young cyclists named Jack Porteous and Maurice Palmer cycled from Lands End to John O'Groats. It took them 13 days and a morning. These boys at the age of 17 went through wasp stings, punctures, bad weather and smelly tents. They are doing it for two charities.
Jack is doing it for Peruvian rural libraries fund and Maurice is doing it for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. They ate porridge, pasta, ate in a café and ate in some pubs for two weeks. Their sugar boosts that kept them going were; jelly babies, Twix, oat cakes, fig rolls and pork pies.
They left Lands End on 8th August and they arrived at John O’Groats on Monday 22nd August. It was an 1100 mile route and they camped all the way. They were brought back by me, my brother Rob, and my mum, Debbie. We had a lovely tour of the Scottish highlands.
