Personal Development

Personal Development is a term encompassing personal, social, health and economic education accross all phases of education.
Early Years
Up to the age of five (the end of the Reception Year) children’s learning and development is set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).  This statutory document came into force in September 2008 and it determines the curriculum and, indeed, the nature of learning for these very young children.  Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) is one of the six statutory “areas of learning” for the under-fives.  Assessment in this aspect of development is also part of the statutory assessment which is undertaken for five-year-olds at the end of their Reception Year.  In fact, so important is PSED that children’s assessed outcomes in this area of learning lie at the very heart of the self-evaluation of early years learning.
Primary Phase
PSHE or Personal, Social, Health Education is a non statutory national curriculum subject.  It came into being in 2000 with the introduction of the national curriculum.
At primary phase the non statutory guidelines are separated into four key themes that includes citizenship;
Developing confidence and responsibility and making the most of their abilities
Preparing to play an active role as citizens
Developing a healthy, safer lifestyles
Developing good relationships and respecting the differences between people
Secondary Phase
PSHEE or Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education is part of the new revised secondary curriculum (2007).
At secondary phase there are two non statutory programmes of study for PSHEE;
Economic wellbeing and financial capability
Personal wellbeing
Citizenship is a separate subject for secondary phase
