Merlin in West Town Lane Primary

Merlin @
West Town Lane Primary School

The BCC Merlin Team have recently spoken to Jay Wright of West Town Lane Primary to see how he's developing Merlin within the school.

"Since trialling Merlin with my year 5 class they have thoroughly enjoyed creating their own e-portfolios as well as adding to our class page, 5W.

Several of the children have spent many hours at home developing the site and have taught me a few new tricks!

On our class page we have created several pages of added content including:

• A discussions site for the children to create their own discussions and to reply to ones that I create.

• A document library with many new folders such as a homework drop off box, movies which the children have created at home using moviemaker, music (although I may have to check with you about copyright issues), powerpoints that the children have created about our Roman project, and various other useful documents relating to our Roman project.

• The children have access to add to the What’s on calendar with important dates such as holidays and birthdays and can see important school information that I upload.

• Really pleased with our class Wiki. I created a homepage with each child’s name as a link and they have created their own page from that link and made other links to their hobbies and things they are interested in. Some have done this really well and created hyperlinks to websites that tell you more about the links they have created.

• 5W photos, I regularly upload photos relating to out project and some of the children have used these to create moviemaker projects about our project at home and brought them in to show to the class.

• The blog has been less successful because I have to authorise every single entry and often I forget to do this until the entry they placed on the log in out of date.

• Finally a class survey to see what the children think of Merlin.

I have recently run a staff meeting to introduce all staff to Merlin and both year 3 teachers have agreed to try Merlin with their classes to extend the trial and also to develop my first place for the lower school. Hopefully by the end of the academic year all children will have access to Merlin.

So overall, children have been very enthusiastic and are keen to use Merlin at school and at home. Some have even added music to that e-portfolios that played when you open their site!"
