South West Grid for Learning is the educational trust created by the fifteen south-west local authorities to support their aims. It was originally formed to purchase a broadband connection to all 2,500 schools. As a need for a standardized platform was recognised, SWGfL commissioned Merlin. SWGfL now co-ordinates the UWE and Torquay Summer ICT Conferences.
SWGfL is a Regional Broadband Consortium and has joined with other RBCs to create the
National Education Network
. The NEN website is a great place to visit to access the pool of shared content from all the RBCs, see the
NEN Teaching and Learning page
.
Content and services that have been purchased by SWGfL on behalf of the LAs are available free to teachers and learners in LA schools. Merlin is free to all south-west schools. In addition, content in the NEN pot is also free to schools in Britain. An example here is
Audio Network
. This was created by LGfL to give all schools access to copyright-free music to use.
