Summer holiday

APEX Summers

APEX is developing and contributing to improving inclusive gifted and talented educational theory, practice and provision in Bath and North East Somerset.

The intention of the APEX Summer  programme is to give children and young people the opportunity to explore and develop, with peers and adults, their talents for creating and offering knowledge in an area of personal enthusiasm as educational gifts.

This year ten workshops ran in parallel for four days during the first week of the 2009 summer holidays after an introductory evening a couple of weeks earlier. 250 children and young people participated working with a workshop provider, other educators and professionals with various expertise, both on and off site. You can get a taste of what they were anticipating by looking at the workshop flyers.

The Presentation and Celebration Ceremony was held on the final day from 4-6pm in The Forum in Bath. Family of participants, educators and members of the Authority were invited to celebrate with us the achievements and experiences of the children and young people. Each workshop made a five minute presentation to an audience of over 700 children, young people and adults before being awarded their certificate by Mr Brian Chalker, Chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council. You can enjoy the video of the young peoples' presentations on YouTube, (click on the workshop title to watch.)

Applications were invited for children and young people who:
  • are in a Bath and North East Somerset maintained school (otherwise see below)
  • have the entry skills described on the workshop flyer
  • want to join in and contribute to, as well as benefit from, the learning of others

Child or young people with a special need, a difficulty with access or transport were given support to attend and participate fully. Schools were encouraged to particularly consider applying for places for pupils in groups which have a high proportion of people particularly at risk of being marginalised or excluded.

Occasionally there are spaces on workshops for KS3 and KS4 and applications will be considered from young people who are not in a BANES maintained schools but there will be a cost. Please email us for further information APEX@bathnes.gov.uk
